Latin American societies are witnessing the multiplication and consolidation of a supposedly new type of governance. Today, self-styled progressive parties and political figures govern in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Cuba, Chile, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Uruguay, Paraguay and Venezuela. Many of the new forms of social mobilisation and the innovations in public policy promoted by Latin American progressive governments challenge the classic variations of the market economy and representative democracy.
Against this background, an international seminar on The New Latin American Agenda is been jointly organised by the Institute of Social Studies (ISS) and the Transnational Institute (TNI), in partnership with the embassies of Bolivia, Cuba and Venezuela in The Netherlands. The seminar is expected to help broaden critical thinking, debate and exchanges in The Netherlands about ongoing political and social transformations in Latin America, in order to contribute to the improved design and implementation of European and Dutch policies towards the region.
The seminar is free of charge and Simultaneous Translation Spanish/English will be provided. Some of the panellists include: Luis Tapia, Senior Advisor to the President of Bolivia, Saúl Ortega, President of the Committee of Foreign Affairs of the National Assembly in Venezuela, Henry Veltmeyer, Professor of Sociology at St Mary’s University, Canada and Isabel Allende, Chancellor of the Institute of International Studies Raúl Roa, Cuba.
