With great sorrow, we announce that Andrei Shmidt from Kazakhstan has passed away on December 13th, 2004. Andrei was active as sexual minority rights activist since 1997. He was one of the founders of the gay group Zhemchuzhina (Pearl) and since 2001 co-ordinator of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance (GALA), based in Karaganda. Hivos remembers Andrei Shmidt as a sincere, dedicated and brave person. He was a pioneer for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transsexual (GLBT) rights in Central Asia. Andrei died from tuberculosis.
